Wyangan Springs Nature Refuge Master Plan
Integration of environmental education into a wildlife refuge
The Project
Wyangan Springs is an 83 Ha privately-owned former farming property in Mudgeeraba featuring some of the most important remaining intact wildlife habitat in its peri-urban context on the Gold Coast.
Most of the property has recently been declared a State Government Nature Refuge in recognition of the extensive number of rare and threatened flora and fauna species, as well as a 2021 newly-discovered tree species on site. The owners’ long-term vision is to provide site ecological rehabilitation, a Centre Of Excellence for Ecological Conservation and to design an Environmental Education Centre to demonstrate adaptation strategies for climate change and ecological crisis.
Our comprehensive site analysis and concept planning work sensitively integrates new facilities, trails and adaptive re-use strategies for existing structures. It’s such a special site – with many rare and threatened flora and fauna species – even a previously un-named tree species was found there! Located only 10 minutes from Robina on the Gold Coast, the site is a real hidden gem – it’s a privilege to be able to work on this type of project and to collaborate with experienced masterplanner John Wright.
