Para Woodlands Nature Reserve Strategic Masterplan

Para Woodlands Nature Reserve Strategic Masterplan

Recreation and management strategies for an ecological restoration reserve

The Project

The 500ha Para Woodlands Nature Reserve lies on the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges, in the Barossa Council area and is traditionally the lands of the Kaurna and Peramangk people.  This former farming property on the South Para River has been restored over the last twenty years to a functioning grassy woodland to provide habitat for local fauna, with a focus on declining woodland birds. It is co-owned and managed by Nature Foundation and S. A. Department for Environment and Water. Mandy led the RD team to identify a new Vision for the Reserve, ways to introduce appropriate and sensitive nature-based recreation on site, taking into account the ecological values and physical constraints of the site and river corridor, as well as a strategic review of other potential opportunities for future site use. Scope included identifying and engaging with key site stakeholders, determining their interest in future involvement in the development of key activities in the Reserve, and undertaking site analysis and strategic site planning and mapping, to enable recommendations to be made to guide potential future activities on site.
